Christmas came early for one employee of Connect Telecommunications Solutions!

On Thursday, December 22nd, The Rotary Club of Kitchener presented this year’s top car draw prize—a 2014 Mercedes-Benz B250!

In addition to a stunning new vehicle, this year’s winner, Steve De Melo, had something else to be grateful for—the raffle ticket was a gift from his employer, Tim Breadner of Connect Telecommunications Solutions.

“I’ve never won anything before,” said De Melo at Thursday evening’s presentation at Victoria Star Motors. “But somehow I had a feeling that this time it was going to be different.”

“This is the second year in a row that an employer has purchased the winning ticket for a member of their staff,” said Martin Jones, President of the Rotary Club of Kitchener. “That is always a fun phone call to make. And of course, the true winners continue to be the kids of KidsAbility.”

The Rotary Club of Kitchener has hosted its signature car draw for over 40 years with proceeds to support KidsAbilty and other Rotary charitable activities.  The winning ticket was drawn at the November 30th Rangers game by KidAbility Ambassador, Michael, Club President, Martin Jones, and surprise celebrity guest, Ranger Ben Fanelli! Monies raised through the car draw, as well as other smaller year round initiatives, have enabled the club to provide over $1.5M in grants to local and international projects over the last decade.

Key sponsor of the draw, Victoria Star Motors’ Justin Nesbitt added, “As proud members of this community, Victoria Star Motors is delighted to support the Rotary Club of Kitchener Car Draw and KidsAbility for the last five years.”

Last year’s winner, Mike Shivji, also received his ticket as a gift from his employer, M&M Meat Shops. “Local businesses have always been generous with those in need in our community. And giving these tickets as gifts to their staff is just an extension of that. We think this a very cool trend to see,” said Martin.

The Rotary Club of Kitchener is Waterloo Region’s longest standing Rotary Club.  Along with their fellow Rotarians, the Rotary Club of Kitchener participates in a broad range of humanitarian, intercultural, and educational activities designed to improve the human condition.
